BIKE BASICS

FRAME STYLES : Hybrid, Mountain, CycloCross, Recumbent...? Whatever makes you happy.

RACK & PANNIERS VS TRAILER : Personal preferance here...I have and use both.

TIRES : A slight tread, not a slick, a path and pavement tire has enough tread to get you down a dirt trail.                 Pack extra tubes, a NEW patch kit, tire levers even a spare tire...you laugh.

LIGHTS AND REFLECTORS : A reasonable headlight and emergency HI-VIZ safety vest.

BRAKES : With the extra weight, you need them to work properly. Check pads for wear.

GEARING : Expect hills...A triple prefered or a double front with wide range cogs on the rear. Check for wear.

PEDALS : I prefer a flat pedal with a toe cage and my trail runners...but there are nice clipless options.

BIKE LOCK : Lock your bike up at night and when left unattended in busy places.

FENDERS : A clip on rear fender and a Grunge Guard really help keep things less messy when it is wet.

MAINTENANCE : Have your bike tuned-up, having all cables properly adjusted for proper shifting and                                     braking and strong wheels. Make sure you have a strong, free moving, chain.

GEAR BASICS...cost VS comfort VS weight

TENT : A good 1-2 person freestanding or non-free standing unit weighing less than 5 lbs.

SLEEPING BAG : Should pack small and rated for the expected temps. Many good choices available.

SLEEPING PAD : Self Inflating, Non-self Inflating, closed cell foam...do some research.

RAIN GEAR : A suitabl waterproof jacket always and pants in cooler weather.

RIDING CLOTHES :

CAMP CLOTHES : Make sure you include, long pants, a long sleeved shirt, warm socks, and light gloves.

CLEAN-UP : A pack-towel, shampoo, toothbrush/paste, shower sandals, deodorant...also carry,"wet-ones".

CHOW TIME : Cookset, stove/fuel , plate, bowl, prep knife, spork, food, matches...Learn to boil water.

HEADLAMP : Have a reliable light. You should also have a small lamp if you intend to camp.

MED-KIT : Purchase or assemble a small emergency kit...for cuts, burns, scrapes, stings, sore spots...

ALL WEATHER SPORTSMANS BLANKET : 5'x7', Many uses from ground cloth to door mat...

BUG SPRAY : Be Cautious...Bug spray and spandex are not compatable.  Do not spray on your tent.

WATER BOTTLE : In addition to your bike bottle, carry no less than a quart of extra water.

GADGET RECHARGING : A light weight electric power strip and chargers.
